In 2017, Google updated its Keyword Tool and put it on the market under the new name Keyword Planner. This tool gives:

This new tool is better integrated with Google Adwords and you can easily select search terms and add them to the planner.

Unfortunately, Keyword Planner also shows a lot of insignificant search terms and we can no longer filter on strongly matching terms. The new tool is less user-friendly and keyword research takes more time.

SEMrush is a powerful and versatile keyword tool that is frequently used by professional marketers. The tool makes it very easy to find out which keywords your site can rank for

best. You can also see how certain keywords score in all major search engines, and it is also ideal for local SEO. SEMrush offers a free trial period of 14 days. If you are convinced after that, you can purchase a subscription.


KWFinder is a SEO tool for search terms research. The KWFinder has a pleasant interface and is easy to use. If you look closely, it actually works better than Google's Keyword Planner. KWfinder is not free but absolutely affordable, easy to use, and a valuable tool to carry with you in your SEO suitcase.

KWFinder provides a lot of ad hoc keyword research and you can use it for free a number of times a day. For intensive use you only pay € 12 per month at this time.

Google AdWords: Keyword Planner

The most obvious choice for many SEOs is the free Keyword Tool from Google Adwords. Just create an adwords account and you can get started. The most obvious benefit is that you are able to get suggestions directly from Google. Simply enter a search term and the first suggestion comes straight forward.

From that moment everything is self-evident. Following the search term you get a lot of suggestions. Go well with it, before you know it you will encounter a golden egg. You

What you should not forget is to look at your competition. They can also provide you with a lot of search terms. It is of course easy to visit the competition and look at the used H1 and H2 terms, but all this can take a lot of time and you will miss a lot of information.

Google Trends

With Google Trends you can enter up to 5 topics and see how many times Google searched for these topics in a given period. You also get to see how often topics appeared on Google News and in which geographic regions most of these topics were searched. This is a great tool for comparing search terms, generating traffic and comparing search terms over a certain period of time.


For keyword research there is not one all-inclusive tool available but you can use a whole selection of, free or not, search term tools. I advise you to experiment with all these 15 SEO tools.
