Keyword Tools

There are a number of keyword tools available with which you can find very interesting search terms. In this article I describe 14 keyword research tools. With these tools you can:

1. Select the best search terms based on industry and monthly volume

2. Create a content calendar based on relevant long tail search terms

3. Outrank the competition

4. Find out which keyword on your list generate the highest volumes

5. Improve your ranking

As an entrepreneur, online publisher or content writer you aim for more - and more relevant - visitors to your website. It is then important to investigate what your prospects are looking for on the internet. If you have this information, your SEO copywriting can match their searches and be much more targeted. It is therefore very important to first spend time on keyword research and only then start creating content.

In 2017, Google updated its Keyword Tool and put it on the market under the new name Keyword Planner. This tool gives:

1. search term suggestions,

2. average number of searches per month per search term,

3. the degree of competition and

4. the average cost per click.

This new tool is better integrated with Google Adwords and you can easily select search terms and add them to the planner.

Unfortunately, Keyword Planner also shows a lot of insignificant search terms and we can no longer filter on strongly matching terms. The new tool is less user-friendly and keyword research takes more time.

If you ever do SEO, then you've probably heard of long tail keywords. Long tail keywords are very specific searches that are entered by potential visitors in search engines. These are searches that consist of three or more keywords, and thus narrow down or refine the scope of the search. They are more specific.

When users enter short, general keywords, or head terms as they are sometime called, they often do some kind of exploratory research into the products or services they are looking for. Long tail keywords are used when users already have a specific idea of what they want, and are about to make a decision and make a purchase. That makes long tail keywords so much more attractive for online marketers than the more general searches of one or two keywords! By focusing on long tail keywords, you can significantly increase sales.

In this article I discuss 14 useful tools for finding the right head terms or long tail keywords for your SEO strategy:

Answer the Public

Answer the Public is a free tool to find out what people are looking for. This website helps you find keywords, brainstorm about content ideas or understand your general

field.

SEMrush

SEMrush is a powerful and versatile keyword tool that is frequently used by professional marketers. The tool makes it very easy to find out which keywords your site can rank for

best. You can also see how certain keywords score in all major search engines, and it is also ideal for local SEO. SEMrush offers a free trial period of 14 days. If you are convinced after that, you can purchase a subscription.

KWFinder

KWFinder is a SEO tool for search terms research. The KWFinder has a pleasant interface and is easy to use. If you look closely, it actually works better than Google's Keyword Planner. KWfinder is not free but absolutely affordable, easy to use, and a valuable tool to carry with you in your SEO suitcase.

KWFinder provides a lot of ad hoc keyword research and you can use it for free a number of times a day. For intensive use you only pay € 12 per month at this time.

1. It offers lists of keywords,

2. a management function and

3. detailed related keywords suggestions.

Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest is a free keyword tool that you can use to quickly and easily find keywords, based on which you can write high-quality content. And that will help you to rank

better in search engines! Ubersuggest is very easy to use by entering your keyword and selecting a target market and country. You also have the option to expand suggested

words and generate more ideas.

Google AdWords: Keyword Planner

The most obvious choice for many SEOs is the free Keyword Tool from Google Adwords. Just create an adwords account and you can get started. The most obvious benefit is that you are able to get suggestions directly from Google. Simply enter a search term and the first suggestion comes straight forward.

From that moment everything is self-evident. Following the search term you get a lot of suggestions. Go well with it, before you know it you will encounter a golden egg. You

get:

1. Average number of searches per month

2. Insight into the level of competition

3. The suggested rate that you have to pay per click (CPC)

All in all, not so special. It is a considerable disadvantage that this tool only gives volumes in very large steps. For example, between 1000 and 10,000 times a month searches for the search term 'children's clothing'. That is quite a margin. Is the data correct with this margin?!

Keyword In

If you want to easily combine search terms into search phrases, you can use this tool. You start with a long tail search term and then you fill this with more specific terms. This search term tool then generates a complete list of all combinations. This is by far the simplest search term tool. It works super fast.

Soovle

A frequently used method to find interesting additional search terms is the autosuggest function of Google. If you enter a search term, Google itself comes up with a number of suggestions which are clicked very often. That way you can also search very quickly by, for example, entering your main search term and then entering the first letters from the alphabet.

Soovle.com also works in a similar way. This free search terms research tool delivers suggestions from a variety of sources other than just Google including Yahoo, Bing,

YouTube, Wikipedia and Amazon.

The results are not particularly specific but you will probably find some interesting combinations. It is best to enter multiple search terms to get the most out of Soovle.

It is simple and fast to use and certainly a good source for search terms.

Wordtracker Scout

What you should not forget is to look at your competition. They can also provide you with a lot of search terms. It is of course easy to visit the competition and look at the used H1 and H2 terms, but all this can take a lot of time and you will miss a lot of information.

Wordtracker Scout is a very powerful Chrome extension with a guarantee of success. Once you have installed the extension you simply visit a website, go with your mouse over the content and press the 'w' button in the menu bar. Some of the functions of this keyword research tool are:

1. The ability to analyse your competition

2. Access to qualitative performance indicators

3. Ease of use

Mergewords is similar to Keyword In and lets you enter unique search term combinations in 3 fields and then generates a list of possible combinations. This is very useful for creating lists with long tail keywords. The Mergewords interface is clear and intuitive to use. You cangenerate thousands of long-tail keywords for free with Mergwords.

Planner. Although this tool gives less suggestions than other tools, you will see links to other search tools to help you further investigate the suggestions.
